Prescription Drug Defined
A drug requiring a prescription, as opposed to an over-the-counter drug, which can be purchased without one. The word "prescription" comes from the Latin "praescriptus" compounded from "prae", before + scribere, to write = to write before. Historically, a prescription was written before the drug was prepared and administered.

- Prescription Drug Price Website - New York State Department of Health: This interactive site will show the results of a monthly survey by the NY Attorney General?s office of prices of the 25 commonly prescribed prescription drugs at pharmacies in various counties across New York state. The site can be searched by city/county or zip code and distance. In addition, you can locate a pharmacy through the site. Note that they are only surveying a small number of pharmacies at any time and prices change frequently, so it is best to call or visit a pharmacy to find out the price before buying medication.
